Abercrombie and Gorges named 97.7 HTZ-FM Brock Athletes of the Week
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University 97.7 HTZ-FM Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the week ending February 6th are men's hockey player Matt Abercrombie (Sarnia, Ont.) and women's basketball player Whitney Gorges (Welland, Ont.).
Abercrombie, a first year student-athlete, helped lead the Brock men's hockey team to a 1-1 record this past week. In the Badgers 2-1 overtime victory over the Windsor Lancers on the road, Abercrombie recorded both goals which included his third game winning and fifth power play marker. The OT winner was also his OUA West tying 16th goal of the season. He currently leads the Badgers and leads the OUA West in rookie scoring with 29 points (16 goals, 13 assists) in 27 games.
Gorges, a fifth year Sport Management major, led the Brock women's basketball team to two victories this past week highlighted by a 76-61 upset over the No. 3 ranked Western Mustangs. In two games, Gorges averaged 22.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. For the week she shot 51.7% (15-for-29) from the field, 75.0% (6-for-8) from beyond the arc and 90.0% (9-for-10) from the charity stripe. Versus Western, Gorges recorded a season high 27 points going 9-for-14 (64.3%) from the field and 5-for-6 (83.3%) from three-point range. She currently leads the Badgers and ranks 7th in OUA scoring averaging 14.6 points per game.
