ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock Badgers men's hockey team (1-3-1 OUA) picked up a huge point in a 4-3 double overtime loss to the No. 4 ranked Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières Patriotes (5-0-0 OUA).

"We have been focused on getting better in all areas, every day," Brock Head Coach Murray Nystrom said.  "I like how we competed tonight, I like how we played with and without and the puck."

In an opening period that saw only seven shots combined, UQTR got on the board first, as Tommy Giroux setup Marc-Olivier Mimar for his third goal of the campaign with 5:13 remaining.

Brock rookie Spencer Turcotte would tie the game 1-1 with just over a minute left in the period, recording his second goal of the season. Daniel Zweep and Evan Morden added the assists.

Four minutes into the second period, Giroux setup Mimar for his second goal of the game, to give UQTR a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes.

Midway through the third period, the Badgers Sammy Banga answered with back-to-back goals just over a minute apart to put Brock up 3-2 with eight minutes left in the period. Thomas Welsh and Andrew Radjenovic collected the assists.

UQTR's Anthony Verret beat Brock starter Adrian Volpe to tie the game 3-3 with four minutes remaining in regulation, sending it to overtime.

After a scoreless first overtime, this one would be decided in the new 3-on-3 format in the second overtime. With just 14 seconds left in the second overtime, the Patriotes Verret and Martin Lefebvre setup Mimar for the natural hat trick and his second game-winning goal of 2014.

Volpe made 23 stops in the loss. UQTR's Francis Desrosiers turned aside 26 shots to pick up the win.

Brock finished the game 1-for-6 on the powerplay, while Trois-Rivieres was 1-for-4.

The Badgers now host the Concordia Stingers Saturday night. Game time at the Seymour-Hannah Centre is 7:15 pm.

Notes:  New OUA and CIS rules this year feature a five-minute 4-on-4 overtime period, followed by a five-minute 3-on-3 overtime period, then a shootout.
