After a busy three days of racing at the National Rowing Championships on Martindale Pond, Brock athletes went home with an impressive five medals. The regatta, which features athletes from all four National Training Centres, is used to crown National Champions in various events. This year Brock had 17 athletes competing: 16 wearing the Ontario colours and one representing Nova Scotia.
It was an exciting day of finals for Badgers on Saturday, with six Brock crews were in either an A or B final. In the Women's 1x,
Stephanie Mowder finished 3rd in the B final to place 9th overall. Mowder, who came 23rd last year, was just three seconds behind the winner of the B final. The winner of the event, Carling Zeeman, placed 6th overall at the World Rowing Championships in September.
The Men's 2- was a very busy event for Brock athletes, as there were four crews in the A final of the event, with one in the B final. Finishing 6th overall, and winning gold in the Junior Men's 2- were Luke Gadsdon and Brandan Andrews, both first year athletes at Brock. Matt Finley and Dave de Groot placed 3rd overall and won silver in the u23 Men's 2-. Finishing 4th were
Grayson Gray and
Taylor Ashwood. With this result, they claimed bronze in the u23 Men's 2-, gold in the LM2-, and gold in the u23 LM2-. The final Brock crew in the A final,
Scott Murphy and Zak Lewis, finished in 5th place. The B final featured Badgers
Ryan Malcowski and Ian Pierce, who finished in 3rd place.
As the university season is soon coming to its' conclusion, Brock athletes are gearing up for three more weeks of hard racing. Next weekend is the first sprint regatta of the year for all crews, as the Brock Invitational takes place on Saturday, October 17th. The following weekend is the OUA Championship, also hosted by Brock, proceeded by the CURC Championship in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.
