Baseball rolls past Queen's in weekend sweep

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – The Brock University baseball team (4-0 OUA) continued their winning ways Sunday afternoon at Community Park as they swept both ends of the doubleheader versus the Queen's Gaels winning by scores of 8-4 and 11-0.

In Game One, six Brock players registered two hits each, including Jeff Costa (2-for-5 with a double), Justin Parro (2-for-4, 2 RBI), Shaun Valeriote (2-for-5), Adam Velocci (2-for-5, RBI), Cam Graham (2-for 3 with a double, RBI) and Craig Jacques (2-for-4, RBI).

Sophomore starter Jason Champ (London, Ont.) recorded his first career OUA victory throwing six innings strong innings allowing one run on five hits while striking out three. Freshman Justin Ayles (Brampton, Ont.) and sophomore David Gardiner (Ingersoll, Ont.) pitched in relief, and held off the Gaels for an 8-4 victory.

In Game Two, the Badgers rolled past the Gaels by the score of 11-0 over five innings. The freshman duo of Valeriote and Velocci once again paced the Badgers offense. Velocci went 2-for-4 with three RBI including two long homeruns over the left field fence, his first two in a Badger uniform. Valeriote went 3-for-4 with two RBI while freshman Kyle Gappa (Hamilton, Ont.) chipped in with two hits and two runs scored. Junior catcher Justin Tamane (Aurora, Ont.) also collected his first hit of the season adding an RBI single with two runs scored.

Brock newcomer Nick Baljeu (Sarnia, Ont.) went the distance throwing a two-hit shutout with three strikeouts for his first career OUA victory.
