Brock men's basketball defeats Mustangs 83-78
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University men's basketball team (5-9 OUA) held on to defeat the Western Mustangs (1-13 OUA) by the score of 83-78 at the Bob Davis Gymnasium Wednesday night.
Wth 8:29 remaining in the second quarter, the Mustangs led 28-26. The Badgers then went on a 13-0 run over the next three minutes leading 39-28 with 5:49 left. Brock led by 14 at the half 48-34.
Early in the fourth quarter, the Badgers led by as many as 17 points, 72-55. The Mustangs would then put together a 12-2 run, traiing Brock 74-67 with 3:39 left in regulation. In the final minute, Western would cut the lead to four, 80-76. Brock senior C.J. Smith (Scarborough, Ont.) would knock down 3 of 4 clutch free throws in the final 20 seconds to secure the victory.
Brock had five players reach double figures led by junior Jameson Tipping (Orangeville, Ont.) who led all scorers with a game-high 17 points and 12 rebounds. He also collected six assists and three steals. Senior Mike Luby (Kenora, Ont.) continued to make his 7-foot presence felt down low registering 16 points and 10 boards. Senior Mark Gibson (Toronto, Ont.) contributed with 12 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Rounding out the Brock leaders was senior Didi Mukendi (St. Catharines, Ont.) and C.J. Smith who added 12 and 11 points respectively.
With his 10-rebound performance, Gibson moves into 13th all-time in Brock career rebounds with 655, surpassing Dusty Bianchin (646).
For the game, the Badgers shot 51.6% (33-for-64) while going 9-for-22 (40.9%) from beyond the arc and 8-for-14 (57.1%) from the charity stripe.
Western finished the contest shooting 41.1% (30-for-73) from the field. The Mustangs were also 37.5% (12-for-32) from three-point land and 46.2% (6-for-13) from the free throw line.
The Badgers won the battle on the boards outrebounding Western by a 43-25 margin.
The Badgers next action is Saturday, January 26th when they travel to McMaster to take on the Marauders (7-7 OUA) at 2pm.
