Brock men's basketball downs Gryphons 84-78

GUELPH, Ont. - The Brock University men's basketball team (8-11 OUA West) defeated the Guelph Gryphons (5-14 OUA West) by the score of 84-78 Saturday afternoon on the road.

With just under five minutes left in the second quarter, the Badgers trailed by nine, before going on a 16-4 run, leading by three at the half 44-41.

To open the third quarter, Brock put together a 7-0 run leading by ten, 51-41, with eight minutes left in the quarter. The teams would share baskets the rest of the third with the Badgers leading 68-57 after 30 minutes.

With Brock leading 70-62 early in the fourth quarter, the Gryphons would go on an 8-0 run, which included back-to-back three pointers from Zach Angus and Dan McCarthy, to tie the game 70-70 with five minutes left in regulation.

Over the next four minutes Brock would answer right back with an 11-2 run leading 81-72 with 1:20 remaining.

The host Gryphons would not go away quietly cutting the lead to four with 12 seconds left 82-78. Brock's Jameson Tipping (Orangeville, Ont.) would secure the victory knocking down two frees in the dying seconds. 

Leading the Badgers offense was Tipping who led all players with a game high 25 points and 14 rebounds. Mike Luby (Kenora, Ont.) contributed with 14 points and 10 boards for the double-double. Rounding out the Brock leaders were Didi Mukendi (St. Catharines, Ont.) and Michael Williams (Brampton, Ont.) who chipped in with 10 and nine points respectively.

Guelph's Adam Kemp and Jack Beatty added 20 and 18 points respectively in the loss.

For the game, the Badgers shot 38.7% (29-for-75) from the field, 32.3% (10-for-31) from beyond the arc and a regular season high 88.9% (16-for-18) from the charity stripe.

The Gryphons shot 45.7% (32-for-70) from the field, 40.0% (10-for-25) from downtown and just 44.4% (4-for-9) from the free throw line.

Brock closes out the regular season with two home contests against the Waterloo Warriors (Feb. 13th - 8pm) and No. 4 ranked Windsor Lancers (Feb. 16th - 4pm).
