Ridgebacks shock Badgers 6-4

The Brock University men's hockey team (5-4-0-0) suffered a tough loss to the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) Ridgebacks (3-5-0-0), in an all offense spectacle. The Ridgebacks offense was firing on all cylinders and managed to earn a lead at four different points during the game.

The Ridgebacks scored the first goal of the game on the power play, as Nathan Spaling managed to poke a rebound past Mark Yetman (Mt. Pearl, NL) for the 1-0 lead. Steve Mullin (Guelph, Ont.) scored his third goal in as many games to create a 1-1 tie. Minutes later Kyle Wetering caused a turnover and jammed home the Ridgebacks 2-1 lead. The shootout continued as two minutes later as Brock's leading scorer Derek Brochu (Welland, Ont.) redirected a pass to the back of the net to once again tie the game. Forty Five seconds later the Ridgebacks reclaimed the 3-2 lead and took it to the dressing room.

Penalty trouble continues to plague the Badgers, and five minutes into the second period Wetering scored is second of the night on the power play. After the fourth goal, Yetman was replaced Rookie goaltender Jordan Bent (St. Georges, N.B.) Brock continued to take penalties, but due to some hard work by assistant captain Gary Friesen (Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont.) they managed to post a short-handed goal to bring the game to 4-3. The Badgers kept fighting and were rewarded by a Steve Pattison (Red Deer, Alta.) goal late in the period to make it a 4-4 tie.

The Ridgebacks dominated the third period. Wetering was able to complete the hat trick and give UOIT the win.

Brock next home game will take place on November 13, 2009 against the Nipissing Lakers, 7:35 pm at the Seymour-Hannah Centre
