McGrath records 50 saves in 3-2 shootout victory over Waterloo

WATERLOO, Ont. - The Brock University men's hockey team (7-10-3 OUA) defeated the Waterloo Warriors (9-7-4 OUA) by the score of 3-2 in shootout Saturday night at the Columbia Ice Fields.

After a scoreless first period, Brock opened the scoring 7:03 into the second period as seniors Josh Schram (Paris, Ont.) and Dan Dooley (Saint John, NB) setup sophomore Dylan MacEachern (Mississauga, Ont.) for his third goal of the season.

With four minutes left in the second period, Waterloo would tie it 1-1 as Brett Mackie and Sam Caldwell setup Kain Allicock who beat Brock goaltender Dalton McGrath (Toronto, Ont.) for his fifth of the campaign.

One minute later, the Warriors would take a 2-1 lead on the powerplay as Kirt Hill added his sixth goal of the season. Mackie and Caldwell added the assists.

In the third period, Brock would pepper Waterloo goaltender Keaton Hartigan and would get the equalizer with 5:33 left in regulation. Juniors Matt Abercrombie (Sarnia, Ont.) and Kaine Geldart (Kingston, Ont.) setup freshman Andrew Radjenovic (Hamilton, Ont.) for his ninth goal of the season, including fifth on the powerplay. The assist was Abercrombie's 75th point of his Brock career. 

After nothing was resolved in overtime it went to a shootout. 

In the shootout, the Badgers Radjenovic and sophomore Daniel Tanel (Brampton, Ont.) beat Hartigan for the win. McGrath came up big stopping both Waterloo's Colin Behenna and Andy Smith in shootout for his 6th win of the season.

McGrath recorded a career high 50 saves, highlighted by 22 in the opening period. Hartigan turned aside 35 saves in the loss dropping his record to 6-8.

The Badgers next action is Friday, January 18th at 7:15pm when they host the Windsor Lancers at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.
