Brock mens hockey drops 3-2 decision to Gryphons

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University men's hockey team (7-13-3 OUA) dropped a 3-2 decision to the Guelph Gryphons (15-7-2 OUA) Friday night at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.

Guelph opened the scoring 9:57 into the opening period as Nicklas Huard beat Brock freshman goaltender Dalton McGrath (Toronto, Ont.) for his eighth goal of the season.

The Badgers would tie the game 1-1 just 24 seconds into the second period. On the powerplay, CJ Dickson (Thorold, Ont.) and Kaine Geldart (Kingston, Ont.) setup Matt Abercrombie (Sarnia, Ont.) who buried a shot past Guelph starter Andrew Loverock for his 11th of the season.

That lead would be shortlived as Jon-Thomas MacDonald setup Huard for his second goal of the game just under a minute later to give the Gryphons a 2-1 lead.

Brock's Thomas Stajan would make it 2-2 with 6:38 remaining in the second period, as he slid one past Loverock for his seventh of the campaign. Dylan MacEachern (Mississauga, Ont.) and Anthony Geldart (Kingston, Ont.) collected the assists.

At the midway mark of the third period, Huard would register the natural hat trick burying a shot over the shoulder of McGrath, which would prove to be the game-winner. MacDonald and Cameron Odem added the assists.

Brock would get a number of key opportunities late in the contest, but it was Loverock standing tall finishing the night with 36 saves for the victory. The Badgers McGrath turned aside 37 of 40 Guelph shots in the loss.

The Badgers next action is Saturday night on the road against the Laurier Golden Hawks (10-11-2 OUA). With five games remaining, Brock still holds the eighth and final spot, two points ahead of the UOIT Ridgebacks (7-15-1 OUA).
