Women's Basketball drops 71-57 decision to Lakehead


ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University women's basketball team (11-8 OUA West) dropped a 71-57 decision to the Lakehead Thunderwolves in a battle for third place in the OUA West Division.

Brock led 17-13 after the first quarter. In the first four minutes of the second quarter, the Badgers went cold from the field as Lakehead went on a 7-0 run leading 20-17 with 6:10 left. The Thunderwolves led 27-24 after 20 minutes.

Midway through the third quarter, Lakehead would put together an 11-0 run extending their lead to 12 points 44-32. The Badgers would bring it to within seven points early in the fourth quarter, but it was the Thunderwolves taking advantage of the Brock turnovers going up by as many as 14 points with 4:10 left in regulation.

Leading the Thunderwolves offense was senior Shannon Vellinga who recorded a game high 18 points. Also in double digits were Tasia McKenna who added 14 points, five assists and four steals and Lindsay Dreury who chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds in the victory.

Brock had three players in double figures led by sophomore Emily McKay (Toronto, Ont.) who recorded 15 points including three treys. Junior Devyn Cuncic (Carlisle, Ont.) contributed with 11 points and five assists while junior Hillary Woodside (Fall River, NS) finished with 10 points and eight rebounds in the loss.

Lakehead shot a game high 46.8% (29-for-62) from the field while Brock shot just 32.8 (22-for-67).

The Badgers next action is Saturday, February 13th at 6:00pm when they round out the weekend series against the Lakehead Thunderwolves.
