Strong fourth quarter leads Brock past Acadia 84-69

MONTREAL - The Brock University women's basketball team (9-3 overall, 6-2 OUA) opened the University of Montreal Tournament with an 84-69 victory over Acadia. The Badgers trailed 65-61 after three quarters before outscoring Acadia 23-4 in the final 10 minutes on route to their ninth victory of the season.

Leading the Badgers offense was senior Whitney Gorges (Welland, Ont.) who led all players with a season high 27 point performance going 10-for-16 from the field and 4-for-6 from beyond the arc. She also added five rebounds.

Sophomore trio of Jessica Del Signore (Brantford, Ont.), Emily McKay (Toronto, Ont.) and Tara Giallonardo (Welland, Ont.) all recorded double figures adding 16, 12 and 11 points respectively. Del Signore and McKay combined for 21 of their 28 points in the second half.

Devyn Cuncic (Carlisle, Ont.) recorded a career high 10 assists while leading all Brock players with six rebounds in the victory.

For Acadia, Emma Duinker added 21 points and six rebounds while Alise Brown and Belicia Bella-Ashe chipped in with 14 and 10 points respectively in the loss.

Brock shot 47.9% (34-for-71) from the field including a game high 40.9% (9-for-22) from beyond the arc.

The Badgers next action is Tuesday, December 29th at 12 noon when they take on the Bishop's Gaiters. Brock opens the second half of the OUA season at home on January 6th at 6pm when they host the Waterloo Warriors at the Bob Davis Gymnasium.
