Coia and Del Signore receive 2011-12 Surgite Awards
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - At the 2011-12 Brock University Athletic Awards Dinner, men's fencer Vincenzo Coia (Niagara Falls, Ont.) and women's basketball player Jessica Del Signore (Brantford, Ont.) were the 2011-12 recipients of the Brock Surgite Award.
The Surgite Award is presented annually to the male and female athlete that best combines athletics and academics.
Coia was the 2011-12 recipient of the R.M. Davis Surgite Award named after former Director of Athletics and Brock Hall of Famer Bob Davis.
Coia, now in his fifth year, has received OUA Academic honours all five seasons. He was the recipient of the Mathematics and Science Dean's Medal and received the Distinguished Graduating Student Award in Mathematics in 2011. He was also one of four featured speakers at the Graduate Student Awards and Donor Recognition reception.
Del Signore was the 2011-12 recipient of the David Atkinson Surgite Award named after former Brock University President and former NCAA All-American at the University of Indiana Dr. David Atkinson.
Del Signore, a fourth year Physical Education major, has been a key part to the Brock women's basketball success over the past four seasons and has also excelled in the classroom.
In four seasons she recorded 495 points, 204 rebounds, 133 steals, 125 assists, and made 99 3-pointers in 78 career games.
Academically, Del Signore has been both a four-time OUA All-Academic and four-time CIS Academic All-Canadian.
This past year Brock Athletics had a school best 174 President's Award winners which are presented to student-athletes with 75% or better. The Badgers also produced 45 CIS Academic All-Canadians and had 76 OUA Academic Achievement honours which are awarded to student-athletes that have maintained an average of 80% or better over the academic year.
