Rosenkranz leads No. 7 Brock women’s basketball past Golden Hawks 60-52
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – The No. 7 ranked Brock University women's basketball team (13-0 OUA West) came from behind to defeat the Laurier Golden Hawks (6-7 OUA West) by the score of 60-52 Saturday afternoon at the Bob Davis Gymnasium.
In the first quarter, Laurier got off to a fast start scoring the first eight points and led 20-10 after ten minutes.
Brock managed to outscore Laurier 15-9 in the second quarter but continued to trail by four, 29-25, heading into halftime.
Nearing the end of the third quarter, Brock senior Nicole Rosenkranz (Niagara Falls, Ont.) went on her own 6-0 run to tie the game 39-39. The Golden Hawks' Lee Anna Osei dropped one of two foul shots to give them a 40-39 lead at the end of the quarter.
One minute into the final frame, Rosenkranz drained two free throws to give Brock their first lead of the game at 41-40. The teams continued to trade baskets until three minutes remaining, when Brock went on an 11-4 to close out the game, which included going 7-for-9 from the free throw line.
Leading the Badgers offense was Rosenkranz who finished with a season-high 27 points going 9-for-22 from the field and 9-for-13 from the charity stripe. She also contributed with team high 13 rebounds for the double-double. Sophomore Kayla Santilli (Brantford, Ont.) followed with 18 points four rebounds and four assists.
Laurier's Kimberley Yeldon led her team with 15 points and 11 rebounds for the double-double. Doreen Bonsu led both teams with 14 rebounds in the contest.
For the game, Brock shot 35.7% (20-for-56) from the field, 18.8% (3-for-16) from three-point land and 65.4% (17-for-26) from the free throw line.
The Golden Hawks shot 29.7% (19-for-64) from the field, 66.7% (14-for-21) from the charity stripe, and shot a season low 0.0% (0-for-10) from beyond the arc.
The Badgers next action will come on Wednesday, January 23 at 6pm when they host the Western Mustangs (7-5 OUA West) at the Bob Davis Gymnasium.
