Balanced offense leads No. 8 Brock women’s basketball past Gryphons 78-66
GUELPH, Ont. – The Brock University women's basketball team improved to 17-2 in the OUA West Division with a 78-66 victory on the road against the Guelph Gryphons (6-13 OUA West) on Saturday afternoon.
In the first half, Brock outscored the Gryphons 44-38 being led by junior Andrea Polischuk (Brantford, Ont.) finishing with 14 first half points.
The Badgers took a 15-point lead midway through the third quarter before Guelph went on a 14-4 run to send the game into the final stanza with Brock leading 63-58.
The fourth quarter got off to a slow start for both teams as the Badgers outscored Guelph by a mere 3-2 score in the first six minutes. Brock's defense stopped the Gryphons from pushing forward giving up only eight points in the final stanza.
In the end, Jenalyn Yumol (London, Ont.), Kayla Santilli (Brantford, Ont.) and Polischuk combined to go eight for eight from the free throw line with less than one minute remaining to take the 78-66 win over the Gryphons.
A balanced offense was the key in this matchup as the Badgers had four players finish in double figures.
Senior Nicole Rosenkranz (Niagara Falls, Ont.) led the way collecting 21 points accompanied by seven rebounds. Polischuk and Santilli weren't far behind finishing with 18 and 15 points respectively. Junior Samantha DeJong (St. Catharines, Ont.) was one shy of her season high in both points and rebounds accumulating 14 points and 14 rebounds for her third double-double this season.
The Gryphons had three players in double figures led by Kayla Goodhoofd who had 19 points and 8 rebounds. Jasmine Douglas and Erica McFadden each collected 10 points for Guelph.
As a team, the Badgers shot their highest percentage from the field since they shot 51.0% in a 75-64 win against McMaster on January 3rd.
In this contest, Brock shot 49.1% (27-55) from the field, 82.1% (23-28) from the charity stripe, and a season low 6.7% (1-15) from three-point territory.
The Badgers held the Gryphons to 26.9% (21-78) shooting from the field, 24.1% (7-29) from beyond the arc, while Guelph made 73.9% (17-23) of their free throws.
The Badgers will finish out their regular season schedule with home games coming on Wednesday, February 13 at 6pm against the Waterloo Warriors (0-19 OUA West) and Saturday, February 16 at 2pm against the No. 1 ranked Windsor Lancers (18-0 OUA West). Both games will be played in the Bob Davis Gymnasium.
