Lavallee's shootout winner puts Badgers past Warriors
Waterloo, Ont - Ann Lavallee (Burlington, ON), not typically
recognized for her scoring, notched the winning goal in a shootout,
as the Badgers' Women's Hockey got past the University of Waterloo
Warriors 3-2 on Saturday.
The Warriors used an extremely aggresive and physical game to
counteract the speed of the visiting Badgers, however, in the end
the strong play of goaltender Beth Clause (Hamilton, ON) and the
Badger offensive attack came through.
Kelly Walker (Brampton, ON) opened the scoring late in the second
period with her team-leading ninth goal of the season. Courtney
Sutherland (Mount Forest, ON) and Kristy Ashton (Port Perry, ON)
picked up assists.
The hometown Warriors tied the game on a power-play with only one
second remaining in the second period. They then maintained the
momentum into a 2-1 lead halfway through the final frame.
Freshman Kristen Dewsbury (Oshawa, ON) beat Warrior goaltender
Erica Bridgewater for her second goal of the season to tie the
score with only eight minutes remaining in the game, Emily Hooper
(Hamilton, ON) and Shannon McLeod (Port Dover, ON) picked up
assists.
The 5 minute overtime period solved nothing, opening the door for
Lavallee's game-winning goal in the shootout.
Clause had another strong outing in net, as she turned away 32
Warrior attempts for her 11th win.
The Badgers are back on the ice tomorrow, as they jump over to the
Wilfrid Laurier Campus to take on the No.2 ranked Golden Hawks at
3:00 PM. They return home on Friday evening to host the Windsor
Lancers at the Seymour-Hannah Centre at 7:30.
