ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University women's hockey team (1-0 OUA) opened the 2011-12 Ontario University Athletics regular season with a 5-2 victory over the UOIT Ridgebacks Wednesday night at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.
UOIT senior Vanessa Johnstone (Niagara Falls, Ont.) opened the scoring 12:58 into the opening period on the powerplay, with senior Jordan Whatley (Cobourg, Ont.) and junior Jaclyn Gibson (Cobourg, Ont.) adding assists.
Four minutes later, Brock tied the game 1-1 when freshman Jaclyn Conacher (Burlington, Ont.) and sophomore Leigh Vanderveen (Niagara on the Lake, Ont.) setup sophomore Jessica Fickel (Fort Erie, Ont.) who beat UOIT senior goaltender Emma Thompson for her first goal of the season.
The Badgers would take a 2-1 lead just 21 seconds into the second period when senior Maja Samborski setup Vanderveen for her first of the campaign.
The Ridgebacks would tie the game with just over five minutes left in the second period, as junior Sarah Worthington (Whitby, Ont.) beat Brock freshman goaltender Chantal Bicket (Oshawa, Ont.). Freshman Jennifer Daly (Ajax, Ont.) and junior Jill Morillo (Whitby, Ont.) collected assists.
In the third period it was all Brock as they answered with three straight goals to secure the three-goal victory.
At the 3:08 mark, freshman Alex Nastasiuk (Barrie, Ont.) found junior Brianne Veale (Sault Ste Marie, Ont.) who buried it past Thompson which would prove to be the eventual game winner.
Brock would go up 4-2 when Vanderveen registered her second goal and third point of the contest at 12:50 with Conacher and Fickel adding the assists.
The Badgers would close out the scoring at 13:57 with junior Sara Brady (Thunder Bay, Ont.) setting up senior Kristen Dewsbury (Oshawa, Ont.) for her first goal of 2011.
In goal, Bicket recorded her first conference victory in a Badger uniform registering 21 saves. UOIT's Thompson turned aside 30 of 35 shots in the loss.
The Badgers next action is Thurday, October 6th at 7:15pm when they host the defending OUA Champion Queen's University Gaels at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.
