Brock women's hockey drops 2-1 decision to Queen's
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University women's hockey team (1-1 OUA) dropped a 2-1 decision to the defending OUA Champion Queen's Gaels Thursday night at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.
Queen's opened the scoring just 1:10 into the first period when junior Morgan McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) setup sophomore Alex Cieslowski (Oakville, Ont.) for her first goal of the season.
The Badgers would tie the game 1-1 with just over a minute left in the opening period, when sophomore Megan Keane (Pefferlaw, Ont.) beat Queen's senior goaltender Karissa Savage (Calgary, Alta.) for her first goal of the year. Seniors Kristen Dewsbury (Oshawa, Ont.) and Hailey Webb (Orillia, Ont.) added the assists.
Brock would get the best scoring chance of the night wiith three minutes left in the second period, when sophomore Leigh Vanderveen (Niagara on the Lake, Ont.) walked in all alone on Savage and rattled one off the left post.
With 44 seconds remaining in the second period, Queen's Morgan McHaffie would register her second assist of the night setting up sister Brittany McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) who beat Brock freshman goaltender Emily Kelly (Port Elgin, Ont.) for the game-winner.
In the third period, the Badgers outshot Queen's 13-6, but it was Savage standing tall turning aside all 13 shots for the victory. She finished with a game-high 28 saves while Kelly recorded 21 saves in the loss.
The Badgers next action is October 15 at 7:30pm when they travel to London to take on the Western Mustangs. October 16th Brock will also be on the road against the Windsor Lancers at 4:10pm.
