WHOCK: Badgers knock off No. 7 ranked Queen’s 3-2
KINGSTON, Ont. – The Brock University women's hockey team (7-7-1 OUA) opened the second half of the season with a 3-2 victory over the No. 7 ranked Queen's Gaels (10-5-2 OUA) Saturday night at the Kingston Memorial Centre.
With just less than three minutes left in the first period, Queen's answered first as Kelly Eustace (Oakville, Ont.) and Samantha Regier (Westmeath, Ont.) setup Taryn Pilon (Peterborough, Ont.) for her sixth goal of the season.
Brock would tie the game 1-1 on the power play at 12:03 of the second period, as sophomore Leigh Vanderveen (Niagara on the Lake, Ont.) registered her seventh goal of the season. Freshman Laura Neu (Ayr, Ont.) and senior Amber Wilson (Brantford, Ont.) added assists.
Queen's Pilon would add her second of the night at 14:53 on the power play with assists going to sisters Morgan and Brittany McHaffie.
Just under two minutes later at 16:46, the Badgers power play would go to work again as Vanderveen setup senior Kristen Dewsbury (Oshawa, Ont.) who buried it past Queen's goaltender Karissa Savage (Calgary, Alta.) for her fourth goal of the campaign.
With 3:26 remaining in the third period, Brock senior Hailey Webb (Orillia, Ont.) would bury it past Savage for the game winner.
In goal, Brock freshman Emily Kelly (Port Elgin, Ont.) registered 30 saves for the victory. Savage added 28 saves in the loss for Queen's.
The Badgers next action is Sunday, January 8th at 3:30pm when they take on the UOIT Ridgebacks on the road.
