OSHAWA, Ont. - The Brock University women's hockey team (7-8-1 OUA) dropped a 3-1 decision to the UOIT Ridgebacks (7-10-0 OUA) Sunday afternoon at Oshawa's Campus Ice Centre.
After a scoreless first period, the Ridgebacks struck twice in the second period with powerplay goals from Jaclyn Gibson (Cobourg, Ont.) and Jennifer Daly (Ajax, Ont.).
The Badgers cut the lead in half on the powerplay at 3:27 of the third period when sophomore Leigh Vanderveen (Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont.) scored her eighth goal of the season on an assist from sophomore Jessica Fickel (Fort Erie, Ont.).
The Badgers pressed hard for the equalizer and fired 18 third period shots at UOIT goaltender Emma Thompson (Hastings, Ont.), but Vanessa Johnstone (Niagara Falls, Ont.) scored an empty-net goal in the last minute of play to cement the win.
Badgers rookie goaltender Chantal Bicket (Oshawa, Ont.) made 28 saves and Thompson stopped 29 pucks for UOIT.
The Badgers will need to find the scoring touch they had on Saturday when they upset the No. 7 ranked Queen's Gaels because they will play two very important games this week at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.
On Thursday, January 12th at 7:15pm the Badgers will host the Western Mustangs (7-9-0 OUA) who sit in eight place in the OUA, one point behind the Badgers. Saturday, January 14th at 3:15 pm the Badgers will take on the Windsor Lancers (8-6-2 OUA).
