WHOCK: Brock falls to No. 1 Golden Hawks 5-1

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – The Brock University women's hockey team (12-13-1 OUA, 0-2 playoffs) had their season come to end Saturday night as they dropped a 5-1 decision to the No. 1 ranked Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks in the opening round of the OUA playoffs.

Laurier's Caitlin Muirhead opened the scoring with a powerplay goal at 18:41 of the first period to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Alicia Martin and Candice Styles added the assists.

The Golden Hawks doubled their lead with an unassisted goal from Blair Connelly 11:07 into the second period.

Just three minutes later, Brock senior Hailey Webb (Orillia, Ont.) set up sophomore Katie Howlett (Burlington, Ont.) cutting the lead to one.

In the opening six minutes of the third period, the Golden Hawks answered three straight times to take a commanding 5-1 lead. Scoring for Laurier were Devon Skeats, Haley Baxter and Connelly, with her second goal of the night.

In goal, Laurier starter Erika Thunder turned aside 16 of 17 shots she faced for the victory. Brock freshman Emily Kelly (Port Elgin, Ont.) recorded 33 saves in the loss.

With the loss, the Badgers end their 2011-12 season and wish to thank all their sponsors, supporters and senior players for continuing the Badgers tradition.
