Brock women's hockey defeats Ryerson 6-1
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University women's hockey team (1-11-1 OUA) registered their first win of the regular season as they defeated the Ryerson Rams (2-10-0 OUA) by the score of 6-1 Sunday afternoon at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.
Right from the opening faceoff Brock was determined to end their losing streak and begin to turn the season around. The Badgers would pepper Ryerson starting goaltender Brianna Tremblay and light the lamp three time in the final eight minutes of the first period.
Scoring for the Badgers in the first were junior Katie Howlett (Burlington, Ont.) and senior Brianne Veale (Sault Ste Marie, Ont.) who recorded back-to-back markers to put Brock up 3-0.
The Badgers offense would continue to roll early in the second period, as junior Leigh Vanderveen (NOTL, Ont.) added her fourth goal of the season making it 4-0. With her two-point game, Vanderveen moved into fifth all-time in both career goals and career assists in the Brock record books.
At the midway point of the second period, Ryerson's Michelle Evagelou would break the Brock shutout adding her second of the season. Just over a minute later, Brock junior Jessica Fickel (Fort Erie, Ont.) would regain the four-goal lead registering her team leading seventh goal.
The Badgers would close out the scoring with four minutes left in the second period as sophomore Samantha Green (Georgetown, Ont.) recorded her first career goal in a Brock uniform.
Veale (2G), Fickel (1G, 1A), Vanderveen (1G, 1A) and freshman Laken Smith (Monkton, Ont.) (2A) led the Badgers with two points each.
In goal, Brock freshman Claire Shaw (Rosemount, Ont.) recorded 31 saves for the victory. Tremblay collected 20 saves in the loss.
The Badgers will now be on the road for three straight games versus Guelph (Nov. 21st), York (Nov. 24th) and Ryerson (Nov. 29th).
