Brock women's hockey captures gold at Waterloo Tournament

WATERLOO, Ont. - The Brock University women's hockey team posted a perfect 3-0 record this weekend at the Waterloo Warriors Holiday Tournament.

The Badgers defeated two nationally ranked teams with a 6-4 victory over No. 7 Western Mustangs and 3-2 win over No. 5 Laurier Golden Hawks in the championship game. They also defeated Scanlon 6-1.

In the victory over Western, junior Jessica Fickel (Fort Erie, Ont.) led the way with one goal and two assists including the eventual game winner. Sophomore Jaclyn Conacher (Burlington, Ont.) contributed with two goals. Senior Rachel Piotrowski (Waterloo, Ont.) added one goal and one assist, while junior Megan Keane (Pefferlaw, Ont.) and freshman Sarah Dolden (Brampton, Ont.) chipped in with single goals.

In the Badgers 6-1 win over Scanlon, Fickel once again led the offense adding two goals. Leigh Vanderveen (Niagara on the Lake, Ont.) contributed with one goal and two assists. Brittany Agius (Perkinsfield, Ont.), senior Brianne Veale (Sault Ste Marie, Ont.) and freshman Natalie Mangos (Markham, Ont.) all added single markers in the victory.

In the championship final versus the Laurier Golden Hawks, Fickel closed out the weekend with one goal and one assist, finishing the tournament with four goals and three assists. Vanderveen registered the game-winner with 2:35 left in the third period. Sophomore Laura Neu (Ayr, Ont.) added the other Brock goal as the Badgers captured the tournament title.

In goal, freshman Claire Shaw (Rosemount, Ont.) picked up the victories over Western and Laurier. Sophomore Emily Kelly (Port Elgin, Ont.) registered the win over Scanlon.

The Badgers return to action this weekend when they host the Windsor Lancers Jan. 12th and Western Mustangs Jan. 13th. Both games are scheduled for 3:15pm at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.
