WVB: Brock knocks off No. 8 ranked York Lions 3-1

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University women's volleyball team (7-4 OUA) knocked off the No. 8 ranked York University Lions (9-1 OUA) by the score of 3-1 (25-14, 16-25, 25-20, 25-23) Sunday afternoon at the Bob Davis Gymnasium.

With the victory, Brock moves into a tie for fourth place in the OUA with 14 points. They sit four points behind first place York (9-1) and just two points behind Toronto (8-3) and Queen's (8-3).

Going into today's match, York had won the last 10 contests. It was even bitter sweet for Brock first year head coach Dale Melnick to get the victory over her alma mater.

For the Badgers this was their second victory in their last four matches over a nationally ranked opponent as they knocked off No. 3 Saint Mary's at the National Invitational Tournament over the holidays.

Leading the Badgers offense was senior Rachel Roorda (St. George, Ont.) who recorded a match high 19 kills with a .436 hitting percentage. Sophomore Lucy McLay (Stratford, Ont.) registered the double-double adding 11 kills and 13 digs. Senior Jennifer McKenzie (Surrey, BC) and junior Tori Stirling (Whitby, Ont.) both chipped in with seven kills each. Senior setter Ally Fast (St. Catharines, Ont.) registered another double-double collecting 36 assists and 12 digs. Sophomore libero Tess Palmateer (Aurora, Ont.) added 18 digs in the victory.

For the Lions, Brandie Wilkerson (Brampton, Ont.) added 14 kills and Melissa Humana-Paredes (Toronto, Ont.)  finished with six kills and 15 digs. Libero Jennifer Black (London, Ont.) collected 18 digs in the loss.

The Badgers are now on the road for their next six matches beginning Jan. 14 when they travel to Thunder Bay to take on the Lakehead Thunderwolves (0-10).
