Four Brock wrestlers capture gold at Senior Nationals

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - At the 2012 Senior National Wrestling Championships, hosted by the Brock Wrestling Club, Ryan Weicker, Tonya Verbeek, Jessica MacDonald and Michelle Fazzari all captured gold in front of a hometown crowd.

In the championship final at 66kg, Weicker was impressive defeating Ryan Lue from the Guelph Wrestling Club by the score of 4-1, 4-1 to capture gold. In the semi-finals Weicker defeated 2012 Canadian Junior Champion Ilya Abelev from the London-Western WC (1-0, 0-1, 4-0). For his performance, he was named the National Championship Outstanding Male Wrestler.

Verbeek, who was named the 2011 CAWA Female Wrestler of the Year prior to the finals, didn't disappoint her hometown fans as she defeated Brittanee Laverdure from the Dinos WC (1-0, 1-0) in the gold medal match at 55kg. In the semi-finals she defeated Saskatoon's Jillian Gallays (1-0, 3-0).

MacDonald dominated Vanessa Brown from the Saskatoon WC in round three to capture the gold medal at 51kg. She defeated Brown by the score of (2-2, 0-5, 7-1). In the semi-finals she defeated teammate Diana Ford (1-0, 4-0).

 Coming off a CIS Championship title less than a month ago, Fazzari continued her success at 59kg as she defeated Amanda Gerhart from the Burnaby Mountain WC in three rounds (0-2, 2-0, 1-0) for national gold. In the semi-finals she defeated Jazmyne Barker from the Dinos WC (0-1, 3-0, 1-0).

Other Brock medalists include silver medalists Jake Hergenhein (55kg) and Alysha Depass (82kg). Bronze medalists are Jasmine Mian (48kg), CJ Hudson (66kg) and
