Verbeek and MacDonald capture gold at Spanish Grand Prix
Madrid, SPAIN - The Brock Wrestling club had some strong performances at the 2011 Spanish Grand Prix. Tonya Verbeek and Jessica MacDonald continued their dominance on the international stage both capturing gold. Chris Laverick placed third at 74kg and CJ Hudson was fifth overall at 66kg.
At 51kg, MacDonald posted a perfect 4-0 record outscoring her opponents 57-8. Her victories came against Serrano (ESP) (W 8-0, 3-0), F. Mori (ITA) (W 13-6, 4-0), I. Ladeveze (FRA) (W 12-0, 4-0), and Mayelis Caripa (VEN) in the finals (W 10-1, 3-1).
At 55kg, Verbeek also went 4-0 outscoring her opponents 49-1. She posted victories over J. Silva (BRA) (W 12-0, 4-0), R. Zasina (POL) (W 2-0, 3-0), M. Andrades (VEN) (W 13-3, 3-1) and S. Corbani (ITA) in the finals (W 9-0, 3-0).
At 74kg, Laverick had a 3-1 record posting victories over P. Crepaz (AUT) (W 7-5, 3-1), Martinez (ESP) (W 8-1, 3-1) and W.Meyer (RSA) in the bronze medal match (W 14-3, 3-1). His lone loss came against E. Coscun (TUR) (L 0-6, 0-3) in the semi-finals.
At 66kg, Hudson finished with a 3-2 overall record. His victories came over P. Piscitelli (ITA) (W 5-1, 3-1), Moreno (ESP) (W 9-0, 5-0) and F. Iglesias (ARG) (W 3-1, 3-1). His two losses were against G. Bucur (ROM) (L 0-12, 0-4) and H. Barnes (RSA) (L 0-12, 0-4).
Also competing for Brock were Jake Hergenhein (55kg) and Ryan Weicker (66kg) who both placed 12th in their respective weight classes.
While in Spain, Brock also had a 5-day training camp with Poland, Austria, Hungary, Sweden, France, Italy, Brazil, Venezela, Spain, and South Africa.
