BELARUS - Brock University rowers Michael Lewis (Dorchester,
Ont.) and Eric Woelfl (St. Catharines, Ont.) both competed at the
World Rowing Under 23 Championships this weekend in Brest,
Belarus.
Lewis was a member of Canada's men's coxed four who placed
second overall in their heat in a time of 6:18.64. In the A Final
the crew finished fifth overall in 6:26.63. Italy won gold in
6:14.26, Germany got the silver in 6:15.17 and Great Britain took
bronze in 6:16.19. Other members of the crew included Ronan
Sabo-Walsh (cox) of (Vancouver, B.C.), Josh Morris of (Victoria,
B.C.), James Clinton (Vancouver, B.C.) and Blake Parsons (Toronto,
Ont.).
Woelfl teamed up with Stuart Taylor (Brockville, Ont.) in
Canada's lightweight men's pair. In the Repechage they placed first
overall in 6:52.50 advancing to the semi-finals. In both the A/B
Semi-Finals and B Final they finished in sixth place which included
a final time of 7:36.04 to finish 12th overall.
"I am very pleased with Mike and Eric's performance at the Under
23 World Championships, said Brock rowing head coach Peter Somerwil. "Both student-athletes have trained hard during the
winter and spring months raising their overall skill and
development which will boade well for their future in the
sport."
The World Rowing Under 23 Championships are a showcase of
up-and-coming athletes who are too old to compete at a junior level
but are still in need of further development to rank among top
senior elite rowers.
