ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - In the next couple months the Brock
University rowing program will be well represented on the
international stage with a combined seven current and former
Badgers being part of the National Team program.
Current Brock athletes Eric Woelfl and Sylas Coletto have been
chosen to represent Canada in the men's lightweight four
event at the upcoming Under 23 World Rowing Championship being held
in Amsterdam July 20th to the 24th.
Woelfl will be representing Canada for the second year in a row
and Coletto will wear the red and white for the first time. Both
athletes started their development in the St. Catharines high
school rowing system and at the St. Catharines Rowing
Club.
"Both athletes are a reflection of the strong lightweight rowing
program here at Brock and have worked extremely hard to get to the
international level of competition," said Head Brock Rowing Coach
Peter Somerwil. "It definitely is a challenge to maintain their
academics at Brock while competing for Brock and meeting the
rigorous testing and selection procedures for Rowing Canada's
National team program. To add to their load both athletes hold part
time jobs to be able to afford the costs of competing."
"Sylas and Eric are the highly motivated intense athletes that
help move an entire program to a higher level," said Brock
Lightweight Men's coach Mike Purcer. 'They have worked hard
to compete for Canada and keep the tradition of Brock Athletes
representing Canada at the World Championships."
Former Brock athletes that will be competing for Canada at the
2011 World Cup in Lucerene Switzerland July 8th to 10th are Larissa
Lagzdins in the women's pair and Fraser Berkhout in the
men's double. Former rower and Brock Hall of Famer Terry Paul
will be part of the rowing Canada coaching staff in Lucerene. Also
involved with the national team program is Peter Cookson, Rowing
Canada's High Performance Director and former Badger rower.
Paul Beedling, also a former rower for Brock, and currently the
rowing Talent Development Coach at Brock University, will be
coaching the junior women's four at the 2011 Junior World
Championships in Eaton, Great Britain from August 4 to 7th.
