ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – The Brock Badgers men's hockey team lost their OUA home opener on Friday night to the Laurentian Voyageurs, 2-1 at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.
Led in net by
Dalton McGrath, Brock managed 49 shots on the Voyageurs goaltender Alain Valiquette, while Laurentian fired 31 shots at McGrath.
In the first period, Laurentian's Brandon Howes took a penalty 28 seconds into the game, before CJ Dickson was called for Cross Checking nine seconds later. The pair of penalties set the tone for the game, which ended up having a combined 50 PIMs.
Neither team could find their way onto the scoreboard in the opening frame, with the shot totals favouring Brock 15-13.
Laurentian solved McGrath at 9:28 of the second period, with Nick Esposto's 1st as a Voyageur on a 5-on-3 powerplay. Sebastien Leroux extended the visitor's lead to 2-0 scoring a goal top corner on McGrath, as a minute remained before intermission.
Brock outshot Laurentian 18-7 in the second, highlighting the strong effort between the pipes by Valiquette.
Following a disallowed Badger goal due to Goaltender Interference,
Matt Abercrombie broke the scoreless-draught, notching his 1st of the regular season. Abercrombie's marker came on the powerplay at 16:43, with assists being handed out to
Thomas Stajan and
Kevin Christmas.
Despite a strong Badger offensive attack in the final three minutes, Laurentian held on for the victory, their first win since rejoining OUA hockey this season.
