ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – In a spirited Thanksgiving affair, Brock's men's hockey team improved to 2-1-0 this season after taking down the Nipissing Lakers 3-2.
Adrian Volpe made 33 saves to backstop the Badgers to the victory, for his first win of the campaign.
Volpe was tested early after a penalty shot was awarded to Connor O'Donnell, but the Lakers forward couldn't poke it past the sophomore netminder at 5:06 of the first period. Minutes later, with Brock's
Kevin Christmas in the penalty box, Matt Paton opened the scoring to give Nipissing the early edge.
C.J. Dickson responded for the Badgers later on in the period, tipping home an
Andrew Radjenovic shot on the power play, with an assist also being credited to
Matt Abercrombie.
It would be Abercrombie who next found his way into the goal column, scoring Brock's 2nd of the game at 19:09 of the first to give his squad their first lead of the game. Abercrombie's goal was also scored with the man-advantage.
After a penalty-filled 2nd period (50 PIMs combined), and the clock ticking down for the 2nd intermission, Nipissing's Grant Toulmin tied the game with four seconds left in the period.
Brock immediately looked to regain the momentum in the contest once the 3rd period was underway, and it was
Kaine Geldart at 4:28 who scored the eventual game-winnner. Assisted by Abercrombie and
Thomas Stajan, Geldart's goal was his first point of the season.
The Badgers sit in a tie for 2nd place in the OUA West, and return to action next Saturday night at Queens University. Brock's next home game is October 23rd against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues at 7:15 PM.
