Brock women’s volleyball opens season with 3-0 win over Mustangs

ST CATHARINES, Ont. – The Brock University women's volleyball team (1-0 OUA) opened up the 2013-14 season with a three set win (25-22, 25-19, 25-21) over the Western Mustangs (0-1 OUA) Sunday afternoon in the Bob Davis Gymnasium.

The Badgers got off to a solid start on offense collecting 17 kills with a .333 hitting percentage in their 25-22 first set win.

Brock was outhit 13 to eight in the second set but played a strong defensive game and took care of their side of the court to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.

The offense took off again in the third set with the Badgers connecting for 15 kills and a .321 hitting percentage to start off the season with a 3-0 win against Western.

Lucy McLay (Stratford, Ont.) and Shenise Power (North Vancouver, B.C.) led the Brock offense with 11 (.381) and 10 (.211) kills respectively. Katie Murray (London, Ont.) hit .500 with six kills on 12 attempts to go along with 10 digs and two service aces. Sophomore libero Karlinna O'Leary (Whitby, Ont.) picked up right where she left off collecting 17 digs after finishing last season second in the OUA with 277.

Leading the Mustangs were Kenzie MacDonald (eight kills, two service aces) and Stephanie Kreuter (eight kills, 11 digs). Katherine McLay had a game high 18 digs playing libero for Western.

Brock finished the match with an impressive hitting percentage of .302 registering 41 kills along with 15 errors on 86 attempts. Western hit .133 in the loss collecting 29 kills with 15 errors on 105 attempts.

The Badgers next action will come on the road against the Guelph Gryphons (0-1 OUA) Friday, October 25th before coming home for a Sunday afternoon matchup with Queen's in the Bob Davis Gymnasium at 1pm.
