ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – The No. 7 ranked Brock University women's basketball team (4-1 OUA) dropped their first game of the regular season with a 54-51 loss to the No. 9 ranked Ottawa Gee Gees (4-1 OUA) Friday night at the Bob Davis Gymnasium.
Senior
Samantha De Jong (St. Catharines, Ont.) had a big first quarter draining 10 of Brock's 12 points to take a 12-7 advantage over the Gee Gees. Ottawa made a push in the second bringing them to within one at 22-21 before the Badgers finished the half with two baskets to take a 26-21 lead into halftime.
Brock managed to keep the lead after three quarters but the Gee Gees came out firing in the fourth outscoring the Badgers 19-10 to take the 54-51 victory.
Senior
Nicole Rosenkranz (Niagara Falls, Ont.) finished the game with a double-double adding 14 points and 10 rebounds. She also contributed with a career high six blocks, five assists and four steals. De Jong led the Badgers on offense with 19 points and five rebounds.
Stephanie MacDonald led the Ottawa offense with 15 points and nine rebounds followed by Sarah Besselink who finished with 14 points in the win.
As a team, the Badgers shot 35.8% (19-for-53) from the field and struggled from both the charity stripe 61.9% (13-for-21) and from beyond the arc 0% (0-for-10). Ottawa shot 34.4% (22-for-64) from the field, 22.7% (5-for-22) from beyond the arc, and 62.5% (5-for-8) from the free throw line. The GeeGes also won the battle on the boards outrebounding the Badgers 38-33.
The Badgers will look to get back to their winning ways when they take on the Carleton Ravens (3-2 OUA) on Saturday, November 16
th at 6pm in the Bob Davis Gymnasium.
