FREDERICTON - Brock club wrestlers Jessica MacDonald and Evan MacDonald did something that has not happened very often in sport. The husband and wife duo were both crowned National Champions at the Canadian Senior National Wrestling Championships Saturday.
"It was great to see Evan make a comeback like he did and win one of the toughest weight classes," said Brock head coach Marty Calder. "For both Jessica and Evan to capture National titles together as husband and wife is something special. They are both very competitive individuals and would not settle for anything else but gold."
Jessica, the 2012 World Champion, defended her national title posting a perfect 3-0 record at 51kg with victories over Alyssa Medeiros (London WC), teammate Diana Ford and Vanessa Brown (Saskatoon) in the gold medal match.
Evan, who made his return to the mat for the first time in over two years, was outstanding posting a perfect 5-0 record at 74kg. He posted wins over Roger Alves (Bears), Daniel Olver (Saskatoon), Ilya Abelev (London WC), Cleo Ncube (Montreal-YMHA) and Shawn Daye-Finley (Black Bear) in the gold medal match. He outscored his opponents 49-9 highlighted by two pinfalls. For his performance, MacDonald was named the Sr. National Most Outstanding Male Wrestler.
"It was exciting to win but I obviously care more about Jessie's wrestling than my own with a goal of Rio 2016," said Evan MacDonald. "It did feel good to wrestle again though."
Ryan Weicker (66kg) and Michelle Fazzari (59kg) both captured silver in their respective weight class.
Other Brock placings included Diana Ford (4th - 51kg), CJ Hudson (4th - 66kg), Jade Parson (5th - 51kg), Jake Hergenhein (5th - 55kg) and Chris Laverick (5th - 74kg).
Former Brock wrestlers Alex Brown (Independent) captured silver at 82kg while Jasmine Mian (Dinos) took home bronze at 48kg.
Prior to the gold medal matches, Olympic wrestlers Tonya Verbeek and Carol Huynh were both honoured in front of a capacity crowd.
