Brock men's hockey drops 9-5 decision to Waterloo

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University men's hockey team dropped a 9-5 decision to the University of Waterloo Warriors Friday night at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.

Waterloo opened the scoring 3:43 into the first period as Kain Allicock and Justin Larson set up Brett Mackie for his sixth goal of the season. The Warriors would take a 2-0 lead with eight minutes left in the opening period as Joe Underwood setup Jarred Parent for his first goal of the campaign.

Brock would make a goalie change to start the second period as Adrian Volpe (Burlington, Ont.) replaced Dalton McGrath (Toronto, Ont.).

Seven minutes into the second period, Waterloo would take a 3-0 lead as a Mackie and Larson setup Colin Behenna for his fifth goal of the season.

Midway through the second period, Brock would get on the board as Kaine Geldart (Kingston, Ont.) set up C.J. Dickson (Thorold, Ont.) who beat Waterloo starter Mike Morrison for his third goal of the year. 

Waterloo offensive would continue to answer as they added four goals in the final six minutes of the second period. Mackie added his second of the night while Andy Smith, Chris Chappell and Larson added singles.

Waterloo would take a commanding 8-1 lead 2:07 into the third period as Anthony Tapper beat Volpe for his first goal of the season.

Brock would answer with three straight goals over a three minute span to make it 8-4 in favour of Waterloo with just over nine minutes left in regulation. Scoring for the Badgers were captain Josh Schram (Paris, Ont.), Sammy Banga (Windsor, Ont.) and Thomas Stajan (Mississauga, Ont.). Brock would add one more in final two minutes as Daniel Tanel (Brampton, Ont.) added his first goal of the campaign making it 8-5.

Waterloo would close out the game with an empty netter from Underwood with 25 seconds remaining for the 9-5 victory.

In goal, Volpe suffered the loss allowing six goals on 21 shots. McGrath collected 14 saves in the first period for the Badgers. Waterloo starter Mike Morrison recorded 27 saves for the victory.

The Badgers return to action Wednesday, January 8th at 7:15 pm when they host the York Lions at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.
