Brock men's hockey defeats Ryerson Rams 5-4

TORONTO, Ont. - The Brock University men's hockey team (12-9-3 OUA West) picked up two big points Thursday night on the road as they knocked off the Ryerson Rams (15-9 OUA West) by the score of 5-4 at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

The Badgers opened the scoring 7:47 into the first period as senior Kaine Geldart (Kingston, Ont.) setup freshman Sammy Banga (Windsor, Ont.) for his third goal of the season.

Just over half a minute later Brock took a 2-0 lead as freshman Jeff MacPherson (Bradford, Ont.) beat Ryerson starter Troy Passingham for his first career goal. Freshman Ryan Purvis (Orillia, Ont.) and junior Daniel Tanel (Brampton, Ont.) added the assists.

Early in the second period, Brock took a 3-0 lead on the powerplay as sophomore Andrew Radjenovic (Hamilton, Ont.) and Geldart found senior Matt Abercrombie (Sarnia, Ont.) who registered his team leading 15th goal of the campaign. Abercrombie also moved into 8th all-time in career goals (57) surpassing Chris Viau (1986-92).

Ryerson would get on the board at 4:16 of the second period as Dean Willmott and Mark Corbett setup Mitch Gallant for the powerplay marker.

At 7:17 of the second, Banga would give Brock the 4-1 lead as he walked around the Ryerson defense and buried it top shelf over the shoulder of Passingham for his second goal of the night. Thomas Welsh (Hamilton, Ont.) and Tanel added the assists.

Ryerson cut the lead in half 4-2 at 12:34 of the second as Domenic Alberga setup Jamie Wise for his 20th goal of the season.

The Badgers would regain their three-goal 5-2 lead at 6:14 of the third period. Junior Dylan MacEachern (Mississauga, Ont.) and senior Josh Schram (Paris, Ont.) setup Radjenovic for his 9th goal of the season. 

In the final 10 minutes of the third, Ryerson put on the pressure answering twice to make it 5-4. Alberga added his 18th of the season at 9:56 and Michael Fine would make it a one goal game with 7:30 left in regulation.

With two minutes left in regulation, Brock rookie goaltender Real Cormier (Trenton, Ont.) made a game saving stop finishing the contest with 35 saves for his second straight victory. Passingham collected 23 saves in the loss.
