Brock men's hockey drops homeopener 7-3 to Gryphons

Box Score 2560Murray Nystrom was hoping his teams perfect preseason would carry over into the regular season.  But three games into the 2014-15 campaign the Brock Badgers are winless at (0-3) and have been outscored 17-5 after dropping a 7-3 decision to the Guelph Gryphons Friday night at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.

Despite the Badgers early woes the Brock Head Coach remains optimistic due to his clubs work ethic.

"The one thing I do like is that we're competing," said Nystrom.  "From start to finish guys are blocking shots, they're finishing checks, they're diving for loose pucks, but it just seems right now things just aren't going our way."

The Badgers have been hampered by allowing early goals and that was the case again versus Guelph.  The Gryphons opened a 3-0 first period lead on just 10 shots.

Nystrom is happy his team can quickly erase Friday's result from their minds as they visit York Saturday night.

"Thankfully. Sometimes in our league we have such a long stretch between games but not tonight," explained Nystrom.  "We get York right away tomorrow.  If we weren't competing and didn't have such a high willingness to compete I would be a lot more concerned.  We'll make our own breaks, that's just the way we'll have to do it.  I think we'll respond well Saturday night."

Guelph would extend its lead to 5-1 after 40 minutes of play before Brock made it 5-3 midway through the third period, but that's all the Badgers could muster.

Teal Burns completed the hat-trick for Guelph into an empty-net.

Kaine Geldart and Sammy Banga scored powerplay goals, while Taylor Fielding also found the back of the net for Brock.

The Badgers went 2-for-4 with the man-advantage while the Gryphons were 0-for-4.

Brock returns home next Friday night.  UQTR is in town for a 7:15 puck drop.
