LONDON, Ont. - The Brock University women's basketball team (3-4 OUA) ended the first half of the season with an 80-72 road victory over the Western Mustangs (2-5 OUA) Saturday night.
The two teams played an almost even first half with the host Mustangs holding a two-point lead after 20 minutes, 39-37.
With the score tied 45-45 with 6:29 left in the third quarter, the Badgers put together a 17-4 run, knocking down seven of their next eight shots, to take a 62-49 lead with just under two minutes left in the quarter. The Badgers held a 66-53 lead after 30 minutes.
Western cut the lead to eight in the fourth quarter, but that was as close as they would come as Brock picked up their first road victory of the regular season.
Brock had four players in double figures led by senior
Kayla Santilli who recorded 15 points. Rookie
Melissa Tatti contributed with 13 points and four steals, while sophomoreÂ
Kira Cornelissen (12 points, 9 rebounds) and seniorÂ
Katie Harpur (12 points, 5 rebounds) added 12 points each. Junior
Dayna Howlett (9 points, 3-for-7 3PT) and senior
Jenalyn Yumol (8 points, 4 assists) rounded out the Badgers leaders.Â
Leading the Mustangs offense was Maddy Horst who registered 15 points. Caroline Wolynski and Mackenzie Puklicz chipped in with 14 points each in the loss.
The Badgers shot 40.8% (29-for-71) from the field, 25.7% (9-for-35) from beyond the arc and 92.9% (13-for-14) from the free throw line. Western went 31-for-63Â
(49.2%) from the floor, including 6-for-19 (31.6%) from long range. They were just 4-for-9 (44.4%) from the charity stripe.
Over the holidays, the Badgers will take part in the Holiday Classic Tournament in Halifax, NS.Â
