Brock women's basketball fall 68-48 to No. 9 ranked Laurier

WATERLOO, Ont. - The Brock University women's basketball team (9-9 OUA West) dropped their regular season record to .500 after falling to the hands of the No. 9 ranked Laurier Golden Hawks by the score of 68-48 Saturday afternoon at the WLU Athletic Complex. 

Laurier jumped out to an early 9-2 lead in the opening four minutes. Brock would battle back and tie the game 22-22 on a Dayna Howlett (Burlington, Ont.) three-pointer with 2:25 remaining in the first half. The Golden Hawks would close out the half with an 8-2 run leading 30-24 after 20 minutes.

In the third quarter, Laurier would extend their lead to 17 after putting together an 11-3 run to take a commanding 49-32 lead with 1:48 left in the quarter. Early in the final frame, the Golden Hawks defense held Brock to just two points while going on an 11-2 run to lead by as many as 24 points 64-40 with just under five minutes left in regulation.

Brock was led by senior Nicole Rosenkranz (Niagara Falls, Ont.) who added 10 points and nine rebounds. Junior Jenalyn Yumol (London, Ont.) contributed with eight points and four steals while senior Samantha De Jong (St. Catharines, Ont.) and junior Katie Harpur (Niagara Falls, Ont.) chipped in with seven points each in the loss.

The Golden Hawks had a balanced offense led by Laura Doyle who registered 11 points. Kaitlyn Schenck and Kimberley Yeldon added nine points each while Bree Chaput and Lee Anna Osei rounded out the Laurier leaders contributing with eight points a piece.

The Badgers offense continued to struggle shooting under 28.0% for the third time in their last six contests. They finished the game shooting 27.8% (15-for-54), including a dismal 14.3% (2-for-14) from beyond the arc. Brock also went 16-for-24 (66.7%) from the charity stripe. Laurer shot 40.8% (29-for-71) from the field, 30.0% (3-for-10) from long range and 87.5% (7-for-8) from the free throw line.

Brock returns to action February 5th at 6pm when they travel down the QEW to take on the McMaster Marauders. They close out the OUA regular season with three home contests versus the Guelph Gryphons (Feb. 8th), Western Mustangs (Feb. 12th) and the No. 1 ranked Windsor Lancers (Feb 15th).
