ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University men's basketball team (4-17 OUA West) rallied from 19 points down at the half to defeat the Western Mustangs by the score of 72-71 at the Bob Davis Gymnasium Wednesday night.
Brock led 13-10 midway through the first quarter. Over the next eight minutes, the visiting Mustangs offense answered with a 16-0 run leading 26-13 with 6:39 remaining in the second quarter. Brock trailed 37-18 at the half.
In the opening three minutes of the third quarter, Brock put together an 11-0 run cutting the lead to eight points 37-29. To end the third quarter, Brock freshman
Jeremy Angelini (Hamilton, Ont.)Â knocked down a clutch three-pointer to cut the lead to seven, 54-47, after 30 minutes.Â
In the fourth quarter, Brock opened with seven straight points tying the game 54-54 with 8:32 left in regulation. Over the next two minutes, the Mustangs answered back with nine straight points, leading 63-54 with 6:37 left.
With Brock trailing 71-70 late in the contest, sophomore
Brandon John (Toronto, Ont.) drained a baseline jumper with less than 15 seconds remaining for the victory.
Freshman
Dani Elgadi (Waterloo, Ont.) finished with a game-high 31 points and pulled down ten boards for the double-double. He also dished out five assists. Angelini sparked the Brock offense in the second half finishing with 11 points off the bench, including three treys. Senior
C.J. Smith (Scarborough, Ont.) and
Brandon John chipped in with nine and eight points respectively.
Western had five players in double figures led by Case Rashayne who registered 16 points , including 4-for-4 from beyond the arc. Gregory Morrow added the double-double contributing with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Peter Scholtes and Eric McDonald both added 12 points each while Anthony Spiridis rounded out the Mustangs leaders chipping in with 10 points.Â
The Badgers close out the OUA regular season at home Saturday afternoon at 4pm when they host the Windsor Lancers at the Bob Davis Gymnasium.
