ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University women's basketball team (11-10 OUA West) dropped a 54-41 decision to the Western Mustangs Wednesday night at the Bob Davis Gymnasium.
Brock struggled in the opening half shooting just 16.2% (6-for-37) from the field and trailed 24-14 at the half.
With just over two minutes left in the third quarter, Brock cut the lead to four, 32-28. The Mustangs closed out the quarter on a 6-0 run leading 38-28 after 30 minutes.
Western would take their largest lead of the ball game, 43-30, with 7:34 remaining in the fourth quarter as they cruised to their 15th victory of the season.
Western's Jenny Vaughan led all players finishing with 20 points and six rebounds. Melissa Rondinelli added nine points and six boards while Caroline Wolynski rounded out the Mustangs leaders with seven points and four assists.
Leading Brock were seniors
Andrea Polischuk (Brantford, Ont.) and
Nicole Rosenkranz (Niagara Falls, Ont.) who recorded nine points each. Junior
Katie Harpur (Niagara Falls, Ont.) contributed with seven points sand nine boards off the bench.
For the game, Brock shot 23.6% (17-for-72) from the field including a dismal 11.5% (3-for-26) from beyond the arc. They also made just eigt trips to the free throw line going 4-for-8 (50.0%). The Mustangs shot 38.7% (24-for-62) from the field, 20.0% (3-for-15) from three point range and 75.0% (3-for-4) from the charity stripe.
The Badgers close out the OUA regular season at home Saturday afternoon at 2pm when they host the No. 1 ranked Windsor Lancers at the Bob Davis Gymnasium.
