Brock men's hockey falls to No. 8 ranked Mustangs 5-4 in OT

LONDON, Ont. - The Brock University men's hockey team (14-10-4 OUA West) ended the OUA a regular season with a 5-4 loss in overtime to the No. 8 ranked Western Mustangs Saturday night on the road.

The Badgers got on the board first five minutes into the opening, as senior Josh Schram (Paris, Ont.) and junior Dylan MacEachern (Mississauga, Ont.) set up rookie Jeff MacPherson (Bradford, Ont.) for his fourth goal of the season.

Five minutes into the second, Western's Steven Reese recorded his 13th goal the season beating Brock rookie goaltender Real Cormier (Trenton, Ont.). Kyle De Coste and Julian Cimadamore added the assists.

The Mustangs would take a 2-1 lead midway through the second, as Matt Clark and Daniel Ehrlich set up Adam McKee for is fourth goal of the campaign. With just over two minutes remaining in the second, the Mustangs Matt Marantz added a power play marker to take a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes.

Just over three minutes into the third, Brock would cut the lead to one, 3-2, on the power play as seniors Matt Abercrombie (Sarnia, Ont.) and C.J. Dickson (Thorold, Ont.) setup rookie Sammy Banga (Windsor, Ont.) for his sixth goal of the season.

The Badgers would tie the game 3-3 at the 11:30 mark of the period. Abercrombie and Banga found Macpherson who buried home his second goal of the night.

Less than a minute later, Brock would take a 4-3 lead, as Abercrombie would get his third point of the night beating Western starter Josh Unice for his 18th goal of the campaign and 60th of his career. Daniel Tanel (Brampton, Ont.) and Cormier added the helpers. 

Western would put pressure on late looking for the equalizer. With 1:39 left in regulation, Marantz added his second goal of the contest tying the game 4-4 sending it to overtime. Erlich and Reese added the assists.

With 41 second remaining in overtime, the Mustangs Reese would beat Cormier for his second of the night and the game winner. 

In goal, Brock's Cormier recorded a career high 48 saves while the Mustangs Unice turned aside 35 of 39 shots he faced for the victory.

Brock finishes the OUA regular season in sixth place and will take on the third place Ryerson Rams in the first round of the playoffs. Playoff schedule TBA.

Notes: Matt Abercrombie finishes his OUA regular season career with 115 career points (60 goals and 55 assists) moving him into 12th all-time in Brock career scoring.
