Brock women's basketball upsets McMaster 61-55

HAMILTON, Ont. - The Brock University women's basketball team (10-9 OUA West) upset the McMaster Marauders by the score of 61-55 at the Burridge Gymnasium Thursday night.

Brock led 12-11 with four minutes remaining in the opening quarter, before going on an 8-0 run leading 20-11 after 10 minutes. The Badgers would extend that lead to 16 midway through the second quarter after putting together an 11-4 run leading 31-15 with 5:20 left in the first half. Brock led 36-19 after 20 minutes.

Early in the third quarter, McMaster cut the Brock lead to 38-27. The Badgers would then string together a 12-4 run to extend their lead to 50-31 with three minutes left in the third.

With Brock leading 56-38 to start the fourth, the host Marauders went on a 14-0 run cutting the lead to four, 56-52, with 4:28 left in regulation. In the final four minutes, McMaster went just 1-for-10 from the field as Brock held on for the six point road victory.

Brock had three players in double figures led by sophomore Dayna Howlett (Burlingyon, Ont.) and senior Nicole Rosenkranz (Niagara Falls, Ont.) who contributed with 12 points each. Howlett had the hot hand from downtown draining four three-pointers. Senior Samantha De Jong (St. Catharines, Ont.) chipped in with 10 points in the victory.

For the Marauders, Danielle Boiago led all scorers with a game high 17 points. The Badgers were able to contain Hailey Milligan who added 11 points and 15 rebounds.

Brock shot 41.4% (24-for-58) from the field, 35.7% (5-for-14) from beyond the arc and 66.7% (8-for-12) from the charity stripe. McMaster was held to their second lowest shooting performance of the season going just 22-for-69 (31.9%) from the floor. They were also 28.0% (7-for-25) from three-point land and 66.7% (4-for-6) from the free throw line.

The Badgers return to action Saturday at 1pm when they play host to the Guelph Gryphons at the Bob Davis Gymnasium.
