Brock men's basketball falls to Thunderwolves 86-79

Box Score 2769THUNDER BAY, Ont. - The Brock University men's basketball team fell to Lakehead Thunderwolves by the score of 86-79 Saturday night at the Thunderdome. With the loss, the Badgers drop to 3-6 in the OUA Central Division while Lakehead improves to 5-4. 

The two teams exchanged baskets early on, before the host Thunderwolves went on a 15-2 run over the final six minutes of the opening quarter, leading 29-12 after 10 minutes.

The Badgers battled back in the second quarter, putting together a 15-3 run of their own, cutting the Lakehead lead to one, 42-41. The T-Wolves Mor Menashe knocked down two shots late in the second quarter to put his team ahead 47-41 at the break.

In the third quarter, Brock rookie Johneil Simpson (Toronto, Ont.) would drain a three late to make it 64-61 in favour of Lakehead. Once again it was Menashe hitting two clutch shots in the final minute, including a big three, to put Lakehead up 69-63 after three quarters.

Brock brought the game within one point early in the fourth quarter, 71-70, but could never gain the lead after a slow start. Lakehead closed out the game going 5-for-6 from the free throw line to secure the victory. 

The Badgers had four starters in double figures led by sophomore Dani Elgadi (Waterloo, Ont.) who recorded 20 points and three rebounds. Simpson contributed with 16 points and six boards while senior Matt Marshall (Burlington, Ont.) and junior Zachary Angelini (Hamilton, Ont.) chipped in with 14 and 11 points respectively in the loss. Marshall led all Brock players with eight rebounds.

Lakehead lineup had six players reach double digits led by Dwayne Harvey who registered 17 points and six rebounds. Anthony McIntosh and Mor Menashe both add 16 points each while Jamar Coke, Alex Robichaud and Becarius Dinkins collected 13, 12 and 11 points respectively. Dinkins was one rebound shy of the double-double pulling down nine boards.

For the game, the Badgers shot 46.2% (30-for-65) from the field, 29.4% (5-for-17) from beyond the arc and 70.0% (14-for-20) from the charity stripe. Lakehead finished the contest shooting 50.8% (32-for-63) from the floor including 44.4% (8-for-18) from three-point land. They struggled from the free throw line going just 14-for-26 (53.8%).

Brock will continue their road schedule next weekend when they take on the Nipissing Lakers and Laurentian Voyageurs.
