NORTH BAY, Ont. - The Brock University women's basketball team rolled past the Nipissing Lakers by the score of 74-40 Friday night on the road.
The Badgers went on an early 16-4 run to go up 21-6 and led 26-8 after one quarter. In the second quarter, Brock put together a 16-0 run to extend their lead to 47-12, their largest lead of the game. The two teams would play an even second half but the damage was done as Brock improved to 4-6 in the OUA Central Division.
Brock's defense forced the Lakers to 37 turnovers leading to a 34-10 margin in points off turnovers. The Badgers bench also outscored the Lakers 27-4 in the much needed road victory.
The Badgers used a balanced attack with seniorsÂ
Katie Harpur (NOTL, Ont.) and
Kayla Santilli (Brantford, Ont.) leading the way with 13 and 12 points respectively. Rookie
Melissa Tatti (Ancaster, Ont.) knocked down three 3-pointers, finishing with nine-points while adding four assists. Sophomore
Kira Cornelissen (Alymer, Ont.) recorded eight points and seven boards while seniorÂ
Jenalyn Yumol (London, Ont.) contributed with seven points, seven steals and six assists to round out the Brock leaders.
Nipissing was led by Claire Abbott who registered 14 points and six steals.
For the game, Brock shot 41,2% (28-for-68) from the field, including 29.0% (9-for-31) from beyond the arc. They were also just 9-for-16 (56.2%) from the charity stripe. Nipissing was held to just 30.8% (16-for-52) from the field and 13.3% (2-for-15) from long range. They went just 6-for-9 (66.7%) from the free throw line.Â
The Badgers are on the road again Saturday night when they take on the Laurentian Voyageurs in Sudbury.
