ST. CATHARINES, Ont - The Brock University women's basketball team (5-7 OUA) fell short against the Laurier Golden Hawks (11-1 OUA) by the final score of 72-67 on Saturday afternoon at the Bob Davis Gymnasium.
The first quarter got off to a slow start as both teams struggled to find their rhythm from the field. The Badgers found themselves down 17-12 as the first quarter came to an end. Brock stepped up their play in the second frame and were able to make it a four point game as the second quarter ended with the visitors leading 30-26.
Laurier held the lead throughout the entire third quarter and entered the final quarter leading Brock by the score of 55-49.
The Badgers mounted a late comeback in the fourth quarter as they managed to take the lead 67-65 with three minutes left in the game. Unfortunately the home side could not come away with the victory as they made a few costly mistakes in the final minutes. The Golden Hawks won the contest by a final score of 72-67.
Brock was led by the play of
Katie Harpur who finished with a double-double 12 points, 10 rebounds.
Kira Cornelissen led all Brock players in scoring with 15 points and guard
Melissa Tatti chipped in with 11 points on the day.
The Golden Hawks leading scorer on the night was Whitney Ellenor with 16 points. Not far behind was Lee Anna Osel 14 points, 8 rebounds and Nicole Morrison also found herself in double digits with 12 points.
The Badgers shot 47.4% (27-57) from the field, 40.0% (6-15) from the three-point line and 50.0% (7-14) from the free throw line. Laurier ended the contest shooting 40.0% (30-75) from the field, 33.3% (4-12) from behind the arc and 72.7% (8-11) from the free throw line. The Golden Hawks also outrebounded Brock 39-31.
Brock will be back in action on Wednesday, January 28th as they host the Ryerson Rams for the first annual President's Game at Brock University.
