Photo Credit: Colin DewarST. CATHARINES, Ont - The Brock University women's basketball team (5-8 OUA) was defeated by the No. 7 ranked Ryerson Rams (12-3 OUA) by the final score of 73-56 on Wednesday night at the Bob Davis Gymnasium.
The Badgers fell behind early in the first quarter as the Rams were able to capitalize on Brock's turnovers and sloppy play. The second quarter proved to be better for the Badgers as they managed to go on a run that made the score 32-30 for Ryerson with four minutes left in the frame. Ryerson did not let the home side get any closer as they took a 46-33 lead into the locker room at half time.
Both teams stepped up their defensive play in the third quarter as Ryerson was held to ten total points and Brock was held to nine total points in the third. Ultimately, the home side could not overcome their first half deficit and lost the contest by the final score of 73-56.
Brock's offensive leaders on the night were
Kayla Santilli with 17 points,
Jenalyn Yumol with 12 points and
Kira Cornelissen, who chipped in with 10 points, 5 rebounds.
The Ryerson Rams were led by the play of Keneca Pingue-Giles who ended the night with a double-double 20 points, 14 rebounds. Mariah Nunes chipped in with 10 points, 8 assists on the night. Three more Rams managed to score double digits on the night. Silvana Jez, Annie Sokoloff and Cara Tiemens all contributed 10 points respectively.
The home side shot 31.3% (20-64) from the field, only 17.4% (4-23) from behind the arc and 70.6% (12-17) from the free throw line. Ryerson ended the contest shooting 42.6% (29-68) from the field, 33.3% (6-18) from the three point line and 52.9% (9-17) from the free throw line. The Rams managed to outrebound Brock 49-29.
The Badgers will be on the road for their next game as they take on Guelph this Saturday, January 31st at 1pm.
