GUELPH, Ont. - The Brock University women's basketball team outscored the host Guelph Gryphons 19-5 in the final quarter, but that wasn't enough as they dropped a 59-57 decision on the road Saturday afternoon.
Guelph jumped out to an early 16-6 lead midway through the first quarter and led 33-23 after 20 minutes.
The Gryphons put together a 9-4 to close out the third stanza, to go up by as many as 16 points at the end of three quarters.
In the final quarter, the Badgers defense held the Gryphons to just two points over eight and a half minutes, while going on a 17-2 run and cutting the lead to one, 56-55, with 1:32 left in regulation. Â
Guelph went just 3-of-6 from the free throw line in the final minute, to hold onto the key OUA central divisional victory.
The Badgers had three players in double figures led by rookieÂ
Melissa Tatti (Ancaster, Ont.) who recorded 17 points.
Kayla Santilli (Brantford, Ont.) conributed with 12 points and five rebounds while
Jenalyn Yumol (London, Ont.) added 10 points in the loss.
Leading the Gryphons was Katherine MacTavish who recorded a game-high 23 points and grabbed 12 boards for the double-double. Vanessa Rampado added 12 points and nine rebounds in the victory.
The Badgers offense struggled, shooting just 29.2% (19-for-65) from the field, 17.6% (3-for-17) from beyond the arc and 48.5% (16-for-33) from the charity stripe. The Gryphons went 22-for-68 (32.4%) from the floor, just 2-for-24 (8.3%) from three-point land and 13-for-20 (65.0%) from the free throw line. Guelph also outrebounded Brock by a 47-29 margin.
The Badgers return to action Wednesday, February 4th at 6pm when they host the Waterloo Warriors at the Bob Davis Gymnasium.
