WATERLOO, Ont. - The Brock University men's hockey team (0-0-1 OUA) opened the 2015-16 OUA regular season with a 5-4 overtime loss against the Waterloo Warriors at Columbia IceFields Thursday night.
Waterloo opened the scoring just 40 seconds into the opening period as Stephen Silas and Daniel Perigo setup Philip Fife for his first of the season.
At the 8:10 mark of the first, newly named Brock captain
Dan Tanel (Mississauga, Ont.) would bury it past Waterloo starter Mike Morrison to tie the game 1-1.
Jake Cardwell (Niagara Falls, Ont.) and
Spencer Turcotte (Mississauga, Ont.) added the assists.
54 seconds into the second period, the Badgers would go ahead 2-1 as Cardwell and
Mitch Nardi (Hamilton, Ont.) setup Tanel for his second goal of the night on the powerplay.
Exactly one minute later, Brock rookie
Skylar Pacheco (Kitimat, BC) slid it past Morrison for his first regular season goal, and the 3-1 lead. Cardwell added his third assist of the night with
Sammy Banga (Windsor, Ont.) collecting the other assist.
The host Warriors would answer back with goals from Tommy Tsocos and Perigo to tie the game 3-3 after 40 minutes.
With three minutes left in the third period the Badgers would take a 4-3 lead as
Adam Lloyd (Orleans, Ont.) and
Brody Silk (Iroquois Falls, Ont.) setup
Tyson Dallman (Prince Albert, Sask.) for his first of the season.
Just 41 seconds later at 17:42, Waterloo would tie it 4-4 on a goal from Colin Behenna, sending it to overtime.
Two minutes into the overtime, the Warriors Riley Sonnenberg beat
Brock starter Clint Windsor (Hamilton, Ont.) for the game-winner.In goal, Windsor recorded 45 saves in the loss, while Morrison added 36 saves for the victory.
The Badgers return to action Friday, October 9th at 7:15pm when they host the Western Mustangs at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.
