HAMILTON, Ont. - The No. 6 ranked Brock University women's basketball team opened the 2015-16 OUA regular season with a 68-65 loss to the No. 1 ranked McMaster Marauders at the Burridge Gymnasium Wednesday night.
The Badgers trailed 33-28 at the half, after shooting just 27.0% from the field and 22.2% from beyond the arc.
Brock would take a 40-39 lead with six minutes left in the third quarter. With the Badgers leading 54-51 midway through the fourth quarter, McMaster put together a 7-0 run with back-to-back jumpers by former Badger Andrea Polischuk and a three-pointer from Danielle Boiago to go up 58-54 with 5:05 left in regulation. Brock would tie the game 61-61 with two minutes left on the clock, but would go 0-for-5 from the field to close out the game. McMaster went 4-for-6 from the free throw line down the stretch to secure the victory.
Kira Cornelissen (Aylmer, Ont.) led the Badgers with 14 points and 10 rebounds for the double-double.
Jenalyn Yumol (London, Ont.) contributed with 11 points while
Kate Harpur (Niagara on the Lake, Ont.) (8pts, 8 reb),
Chrissy Sirignano (St. Catharines, Ont.) (8 pts) and
Baelie Campbell (Halifax, NS) (8pts) all chipped in with eight points each in the loss.
McMaster had three starters in double figures led by Danielle Boiago who finished with a game high 18 points and nine rebounds. Rachael Holmes added 14 points while Clare Kenney collected the double-double finishing with 11 points and 10 boards.
For the game, the Badgers shot 28.0% (21-for-75) from the field, 26.5% (9-for-34) from three-point range and 66.7% (14-for-21) from the charity stripe. The Marauders went 26-for-63 (41.3%) from the floor, 6-for-18 (33.3%) from beyond the arc and 10-for-17 (58.8%) from the free throw line.
