SAULT STE MARIE, Ont.- The Brock University men's basketball team (2-0 OUA) defeated the Algoma Thunderbirds by the score of 64-57 Friday night on the road.
The two teams exchanged baskets for the majority of the first half, as they were deadlocked 28-28 at the half.
Midway through the third quarter, the Badgers trailed 41-34, before going on a 13-4 run in the final five minutes to take a 47-45 lead after 30 minutes.
Algoma opened the fourth quarter with a three-pointer to go up 48-47. The Badgers answered back with an 11-5 run, leading 59-52 with 3:31 left in regulation. The Thunderbirds cut the lead to four 59-55 with just under two minutes left, but it was a
Dani Elgadi (Waterloo, Ont.) layup and two free throws from
Johneil Simpson (Toronto, Ont.) that secured the road victory.
Brock had three players in double figures led by Elgadi who finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds for the double double.
Ryan Bennett (Toronto, Ont.) chipped in with 15 points while
Tyler Brown (Hamilton, Ont.) (10 points) and Simpson (9 points, 8 rebounds) rounded out the Badgers leaders. Algoma also had three players reach double digits as Andre Barber, Adam Benrabah and Cailum White chipped in with 13, 12, 11 points respectively.
For the game, the Badgers shot 43.6% (24-for-55) from the field, 46.7% (7-for-15) from beyond the arc and just 57.1% (8-for-14) from the charity stripe. Algoma went 18-for-62 (29.0%) from the floor, 9-for-20 (45.0%) from three-point range and 12-for-20 (60.0%) from the free throw line. Algoma forced the Badgers into 22 turnovers, which led to them outscoring Brock 14-2 off turnovers.
The Badgers return to action the weekend of November 20-21 as they take on the York Lions and Queen's Gaels on the road. Tickets for the Home Opener Weekend vs Lakehead go on sale Thursday, November 12th at 10am.
