ST. CATHARINES, Ont - The Brock University men's basketball team (7-10 OUA) defeated the Guelph Gryphons (7-9 OUA) Wednesday evening at the Bob Davis Gymnasium by the final score of 62-55.
The Bob Davis Gymnasium was sold out Wednesday evening as home fans gathered to see their Badgers fight for a playoff berth. The Gyphons weren't to be taken lightly as both teams clinged to their playoff hopes coming into Wednesday's game.
The Badgers were the stronger side in the first quarter, opening the game with a 13-6 run. Brock led by 12 after one quarter 22-10.
Brock's strong overall play led to the home side outscoring their opponents three out of the four quarters. When the final buzzer sounded, the score read 62-55 in favour of the Badgers.
The Badgers had three players in double-digits led by rookie
Johneil Simpson (15 points, 9 rebounds) and Zach Angelini (15 points, 4 rebounds). Point guard
Nolan Mackenzie added 11 points and four boards, while tallying a career-high nine assists.
Matt Marshall totalled nine points and eight rebounds, while
Dani Elgadi collected six points and nine boards in the victory.
Johnathon Wallace led the Gryphons in scoring, going 7-of-14 from the field, and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc for 17 points. Trevor Thompson added 13 points and 10 rebounds for the double-double.
For the game, the Badgers shot 39% (23-for-59) from the field, while struggling from beyond the arc – shooting just 17.6% (3-for-17). Brock also went 13-for-18 (72.2%) from the charity stripe. Guelph struggled from the floor shooting just 19-for-65 (29.0%). From three-point land the Gryphons sank 3-of-17 (17.6.%). The visitors dropped 14-of-18 (77.8%) from the charity stripe.
The Badgers return to action this Saturday February, 14th as they welcome the University of Toronto Varsity Blues to the Bob Davis Gymnasium.
